It's usually easiest to choose a color first. Kids will like to have input in this step. Bright colors and crazy patterns are usually favorites in kids' bedrooms. More mature colors should be saved for the rest of the home. You can take color in some very unique directions, but you should make sure it fits in with the rest of the room as well. Kids' rooms are often themed so certain colors and patterns will look better than others. In the case that there's no theme or style to the room, it's easiest to use the walls as a starting point. Find bedding that matches or complements the color of the walls and you can't go wrong.
The main reason this is happens is that many parents will just think that they'll grow into it in time. This is true but it won't be until their late teens that they will have grown into it! This means that while they are still young you should make sure they have a correct sized bed to sleep in.
