If you already have a perfectly serviceable bed, you may not want to go the expense of purchasing a whole new bed. In this case it is possible to buy the sleigh design headboard only - and perhaps also the footboard. Make sure the width is the same as your bed or existing headboard, and it is generally fairly easy to switch headboards and give your bed a brand new look. If you change the headboard and footboard, the type and finish of the wood you choose shouldn't matter. You should be able to use anything you like.
It's usually easiest to choose a color first. Kids will like to have input in this step. Bright colors and crazy patterns are usually favorites in kids' bedrooms. More mature colors should be saved for the rest of the home. You can take color in some very unique directions, but you should make sure it fits in with the rest of the room as well. Kids' rooms are often themed so certain colors and patterns will look better than others. In the case that there's no theme or style to the room, it's easiest to use the walls as a starting point. Find bedding that matches or complements the color of the walls and you can't go wrong.
